After winning the toss, Australian captain Pat Cummins chose to bat first at Kensington Oval. By lunch, the visitors were struggling at 3 for 65. Opener Usman Khawaja (32*) and vice-captain Travis Head (21*) were holding the fort, both unbeaten at the crease.

The tall Western Australian was dismissed in a manner almost identical to his double failure in the World Test Championship final against South Africa: reaching out with hard hands and edging into the slip cordon.
